WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO RE-KEY A LOCK?

Re-Keying is when the cylinder of your lock is changed by replacing the pins so that the current key will no longer work in the lock. A New key with different cuts will be given to you in its replacement.

WHEN SHOULD YOU RE-KEY YOUR LOCKS ?

The reason people should re-key their locks include:  Lost or stolen keys, a tenant moves out, your purse is stolen, New construction and you don't know how many of the subcontractors still have the key, YOU JUST PURCHASED A NEW HOME AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHO STILL HAS A KEY. One of the most popular reasons to re-key your locks is to have all of your locks working with only one key. This makes it convenient so you do not have to carry a hand full of keys for you home.  Another reason people re-key their locks is to prevent THEFT from someone who has a key but no longer works/ lives there.

Re-Keying is less expensive than replacing all of the locks.

DID YOU KNOW ?

You can prevent thefts by the simple process of rekeying your locks.

If it takes more than 60 seconds to break into a home, a burglar will often give up and move on.

HOME SECURITY TIPS:

1. Keep a list of all valuables (jewelry, computers, TV's, stereos, ) and list their serial numbers and descriptions. It's also a good idea to photograph your items.

2. External doors should have a sturdy dead bolt lock and a door frame reinforcement kit.. .Use metal or solid wood exterior doors with a wide-angle viewer.

3. Sliding glass doors should be properly secured with extra commercially installed locks to help prevent them from being popped of the tract and forced open.

4. Never hide keys around the outside of your home. Give your extra key to a trusted neighbor or family member.

5. Install a security alarm, especially if you live in an isolated area.

6. When taking your car in for repairs, never leave your house keys on the ring.

7. Before turning your house key over to a professional house cleaner for several hours, make sure the person is honest and reputable as well as hardworking. Check all references thoroughly. If the house cleaner is from a firm, call your local Better Business Bureau to check on the firm's reputation.

8. Always re-key your locks whenever you move into a new home or apartment.

9. When you arrive home and things look or feel questionable, like a broken window or open door-don't go in, go to a safe place and contact Police.

 10. Install bright lights outside, preferably motion sensing ones.

11. If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call a mechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the call yourself.

·12. If you travel or are away frequently, install light timers.

13.Don't let your mail pile up, contact the Post Office to hold it.

14. Make sure your house number is clearly displayed so emergency vehicles can quickly find your home

15. Dogs are good deterrents to burglars. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence. Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets. Obedience training and attack training are entirely different, and only the former is appropriate for a house pet .

16. Prune all shrubs and trees, keep your yard clean.

17. Answering machine messages should never say that you are not home. Say, "I'm not available," instead.

18. To keep your tools from being stolen, paint the handles. Thieves avoid items that are easy to identify.
